![]() Preliminary plans for the XM70 included a turbocharged diesel engine and laminate armour, taking inspiration from the British Wellman applique scheme but significantly improving upon it. The XM70 programme sought to furnish the US Army and Marines with a main battle tank capable of meeting the foreseen battlefield of the 1970s and beyond. While the plan for the FTA programme was to retrofit it into existing M60 and M60A1 hulls, a replacement for the Patton was clearly needed. ![]() ![]() Trials of the system were progressing on the light Sheridan tank, with a re-engineered version of the M60 Patton to begin trials with the system by late-1969. The new Future Tank Armament programme would press on, intending to produce a 6-inch (152mm) gun capable of firing low-velocity HEAT rounds and the MGM-51 Shillelagh anti-tank missile.
